Yahoo requires an app-specific password to allow third-party apps like Mail in Sync to connect via IMAP. Your main Yahoo password will not work. ← Back to Help

Step 1 — Enable two-step verification

App passwords are only available when two-step verification is turned on.

  1. Go to Yahoo Account Security.
  2. Under Two-step verification, click Turn on and follow the prompts.
Step 2 — Generate an app password
  1. Go to Yahoo Account Security.
  2. Scroll to App passwords and click Generate app password.
  3. From the app selector choose Other app and enter a name (e.g. Mail in Sync).
  4. Click Generate and copy the 16-character password shown. You will not see it again.
Step 3 — Add the connection in Mail in Sync
  1. Go to Settings and click + Add connection.
  2. Enter your full Yahoo email address.
  3. Select Yahoo Mail as the provider — the IMAP host and port fill in automatically.
  4. Paste the 16-character app password into the password field.
  5. Click Test connection to verify, then Save.

IMAP settings: imap.mail.yahoo.com port 993 SSL/TLS.

Troubleshooting
Authentication failed

Make sure you're using the app password, not your main Yahoo password. App passwords are 16 characters with no spaces. If the password has expired or been revoked, generate a new one in Yahoo Account Security.

Can't find "App passwords" in Yahoo settings

The App passwords option only appears after two-step verification is enabled. Complete Step 1 first.
