Outlook / Hotmail setup
Connecting your Microsoft email account to Mail in Sync
Outlook, Hotmail, Live, and MSN addresses are all handled by Microsoft and require an app password when two-step verification is enabled. ← Back to Help
- Sign in to Microsoft Account Security.
- Click Advanced security options.
- Under Two-step verification, click Turn on and complete the setup.
If two-step verification is already on, skip to Step 2. If you prefer not to enable it, you can use your regular Microsoft password — skip to Step 3.
- Go to Microsoft Account Security → Advanced security options.
- Scroll to App passwords and click Create a new app password.
- Copy the password shown — you will not see it again.
See Microsoft's official guide for more detail.
- Go to Settings and click + Add connection.
- Enter your Outlook/Hotmail email address.
- Select Outlook / Hotmail as the provider — IMAP settings fill in automatically.
- Enter the app password (or your regular password if 2-step verification is off).
- Click Test connection to verify, then Save.
IMAP settings: outlook.office365.com port 993 SSL/TLS.
Authentication failed
If two-step verification is enabled, you must use an app password rather than your main password. If two-step verification is off, try your regular Microsoft password. Also ensure IMAP access has not been disabled in Outlook IMAP settings.
IMAP is disabled on my account
Go to Outlook settings → Mail → Sync email, enable IMAP, and save. Then retry the connection.
