Gmail as source setup
Syncing from one Gmail account into another
You can use Mail in Sync to copy mail from one Gmail account (your source) into another Gmail account (your destination). This requires enabling IMAP and creating a Google app password. ← Back to Help
- Sign in to your source Gmail account.
- Click the gear icon → See all settings.
- Go to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
- Under IMAP access, select Enable IMAP and click Save Changes.
App passwords require 2-step verification to be active on the source account.
- Go to Google Account Security.
- Click 2-Step Verification and follow the setup steps.
- Go to Google App Passwords.
- Enter a name (e.g. Mail in Sync) and click Create.
- Copy the 16-character password shown — you will not see it again.
If the App Passwords page says it's not available, 2-step verification may not be fully enabled yet.
- Go to Settings and click + Add connection.
- Enter your source Gmail address.
- Select Gmail as the provider — IMAP settings fill in automatically.
- Paste the app password into the password field.
- Click Test connection to verify, then Save.
IMAP settings: imap.gmail.com port 993 SSL/TLS.
Authentication failed
Confirm IMAP is enabled in source Gmail settings and that you're using the app password (not your Google account password). If your Google account uses an organisation, the admin may have disabled app passwords — check with your admin.
App Passwords page is unavailable
App passwords are disabled for Google Workspace accounts where the admin has enforced Google Sign-In. In this case, contact your Google Workspace admin or use a personal Gmail account as the source instead.
Email us at support@emailsync.app with the error message you're seeing.
